UGO LA PIETRA
SECTION: DECADES – STUDIO DABBENI – PAD. 4 – A36
Among the curated sections of the fair, Decades – curated by Alberto Salvadori – will explore the history of the twentieth century through monographic or thematic stands, each presenting key moments of a specific decade, from 1910 to 2010. Studio Dabbeni will present the work of Ugo La Pietra in a thematic exhibition, starting with his early works from the 1960s, ‘Nodi Urbani’, ‘Tuberie’, moving through to the 1970s, with ‘Recupero e reinvezione’, ‘Viaggio su Reno’, right up to his works of the 1990s, ‘La casa telematica’ and ‘Europa Unita? Il pranzo non è ancora servito’. The publication Ugo La Pietra, Viaggio sul Reno, 1974, will also be presented, now published by Artphilein Editions of Lugano. His cruise along the Rhine was in fact an artistic experience conducted together with the Global Tools Communication Group, comprising of Franco Vaccari, Gianni Pettena and Guido Arra. Through this voyage/performance, the artists explored the theme of ‘communication’ in a closed and segregated environment such as that of an organised boat trip: from the limited context, shaped by regular rhythms and a minimisation of influences from the outside world, the participants’ behaviour, their interaction and communication processes emerge.
Ugo La Pietra was born in 1938 in Bussi sul Tirino (province of Pescara) and lives and works in Milan. In 1962 he began to develop an approach aimed at clarifying and defining the ‘individual–environment’ relationship. At the beginning of this process, he devised instruments of knowledge (models of understanding) aimed at transforming the traditional ‘work–onlooker’ relationship. He has worked inside and outside the disciplines, always declaring himself to be a ‘researcher in the visual arts’: an anomalous and awkward artist, and therefore one that defies classification. Since 1960, his research has explored various artistic currents (‘signic art’, ‘conceptual art’, ‘environmental art’, ‘social art’, ‘narrative art’, ‘artist’s cinema’, ‘new writing’, ‘extra media’, ‘neo-eclecticism’ as well as radical architecture and design). He has communicated and disseminated his thoughts and experiences through intense teaching and publishing activities. He has promoted research groups (Gruppo del Cenobio, Gruppo La Lepre Lunare, Gruppo Design Radicale, Global Tools, Cooperativa Maroncelli, Fabbrica di Comunicazione and Libero Laboratorio) and exhibition activities involving a large number of subjects (from artists to architects and designers). From 4 September to 31 October 2021 at the Triennale in Milan, the Fondazione Cologni will present Fittile: featuring Italian artistic craftsmanship in contemporary ceramics, curated by Ugo La Pietra.
We would like to thank the Archivio La Pietra, Ugo La Pietra, Lucio La Pietra, Simona Cesana and Artphilein Editions.
